MÉNIL-JEAN

The territory of this village extends on the left bank of the Orne river ...

LA CHAPELLE NOTRE-DAME DE PITIÉ

In fact, this chapel is part of the old church of Ménil-Jean. The original church built in the 12th century was extensively altered in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is located 500 m south of the 'Pont de la Villette', following the dirt road that goes up the river 'Orne'. On the left bank, a steep path climbs up through the trees. Its site is magnificent, surrounded on all sides by woods and water, overlooking the Orne, about ten meters. The early church was 23 meters long. Shortly after 1851, it was amputated from its western part, now budding. The eastern part, formerly the choir, became “the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Pitié”, measuring 8 meters in length by 8.70 meters in width on the outside.

LA LONGUE ROCHE À GIEL-COURTEILLES

If you cross the 'Pont de la Villette', you arrive in the village of Giel-Courteilles. Take the path to the left of the bridge, here rises the menhir (standing stone, from the Celtic word, long stone) of 'Longue Roche'.
This menhir is a quadrangular block of granite slightly inclined to the north. It is 3 meters high for a width of 1.80 meters and a thickness of 1 meter. Its base is roughly oriented east-west. The block is locally sourced.
